Japan experiences earthquakes, landslides, typhoons, floods, tsunamis, tornadoes, and volcanic eruptions. Precautions should always be taken, and you should not put yourself in danger. The local government in your area will have emergency measures in case a disaster occurs, so please be sure to inquire with the local government for more information. What to do if an earthquake occurs. The ground shakes, houses may be destroyed, and tsunamis (high waves) may occur in some areas. Here are some precautionary measures that you can take during and when the earthquake happens.
Items may fall from above, so take shelter under a table or desk and protect your head and body.
Extinguish all flames, once the shaking subsides. Also, be sure to turn off your gas. Make sure you know how to do this ahead of time.
Don’t panic and evacuate by walking. Panicking will only cause everyone to trample over one another so please be calm.
Here are steps to take if there is a big earthquake:
If you are outside, walk directly to your Evacuation Center. Don’t go back to your home.
If it occurs in the school, follow the teachers’ instruction.
If the earthquake is big, it may affect the electricity, water, and public transportation. If you are home, everyday readiness is important.
Everyday readiness - Being ready for an earthquake is as equally as important as protecting yourself during an earthquake. Here are some precautionary measures of readiness you can take before an earthquake occurs. *Make sure that your furniture will not fall over. *Prepare items to take with you in an emergency (water, preserved food etc.).
