TEACHING IN JAPANESE PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Public schools in Japan are under different Boards of Education located in different prefectures and major cities. But in some areas elementary and junior high schools are managed by local (municipal) boards of education. A big percentage of Japanese students are enrolled in the public schools found in their respective communities.

Public elementary and junior high schools are compulsory and free for everyone. Although the tuition fees and books are free, money for other things like writing materials, notebooks, school trips and other events are to be provided by the parents/guardians.

The normal size for public schools is 30-40 students per class for both elementary and junior highs. But of course, this would still depend a lot on the location of each school. There are some schools that are quite remote, so they have very few students. For most elementary schools, the day starts at 8 am and usually ends at about 3 pm. While on the other hand, for junior high schools, it starts at 8 am to 3 to 4 in the afternoon. In between those hours, students have about one and a half hour for lunch. A company contracted by the school for the whole school year prepares the lunch for all students and teachers.

As most schools around the world, Japanese students also engage themselves in different after school programs or gclub activitiesh. More than half the students join these activities, which include sports, arts, dance, drama etc. Teachers or student heads like team captains handles club activities. Other than these activities, some students also attend cram schools, which they call gjukuh.
