| |
| |
There are basically 2 common types of health insurance applied to most Japanese employees. The first is the Social Insurance (Kenkou Hoken), which is usually for private company employees. The company mostly pays this type of insurance where the employee is working. The other type is the National Health Insurance (Kokumin Kenkou Hoken), which is usually applied by self-employed people, students and most foreigners. |

Only by having an Alien Registration Card, can a foreigner apply for a National Health Insurance. Without it, getting sick and going to a hospital would be very expensive. So it is highly recommended for foreigners to have an insurance plan while they are staying here in Japan. This is because Health Insurance cover almost 70% of the medical cost incurred by the patient. The price of the National Health Insurance premiums will depend on the income during the previous year. Applicants are given either a booklet or a card after applying for it and it can be paid in the bank or the post office. |
