LIVING IN JAPAN : ALIEN REGISTRATION CARD

"Ive been stopped by policemen countless times in Ueno and Tokyo stations to ask for my Alien Registration Card..."

For foreigners intending to stay in Japan for more than 90 days must secure an Alien Registration Card. Since the Japanese government has become strict with foreigners illegally staying here, it is highly recommended that foreigners should always bring their Alien cards with them wherever they go. Police and immigration officers go around train stations and some restaurants and bars looking for people illegally staying in Japan. Foreigners staying in the major urban areas like Tokyo are the ones who usually experience being checked by the authorities.

This is applied in the City Office and it takes about 2 weeks before you could pick up your card. Within the two weeks, you will be given a paper, which you can show, to the police if they ask you for an Alien Card. Also, this would serve as a receipt for you to claim your Alien Card. When applying, you will be asked to show them your passport and two-passport sized photos (4.5x3.5cm).
